Europol has raised concerns about the potential misuse of Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot, in various criminal activities such as phishing attempts, disinformation, and cybercrime. While ChatGPT's language abilities have led to the development of similar products and their integration into various apps and products, its misuse by criminals can have grave consequences. Europol has highlighted three areas of crime where ChatGPT could be harmful, including its ability to draft highly realistic text for phishing purposes, its potential use for propaganda and disinformation, and the possibility of criminals using it to produce malicious code. Europol's first tech report has sounded the alarm about the grim outlook of the criminal use of large language models like ChatGPT as their capabilities are continuously improved
